Are you looking for an experience meant to lift your spirits? Consider making plans to meet friends for happy hour at one of Huntsville’s newest hotspots, Baker & Able Rooftop Bar, topping off 106 JEFFERSON in the heart of downtown.
View and Cocktails
There are few things to expect from a visit to Baker & Able Rooftop Bar. For one thing, expect breathtaking views of the Rocket City from the highest point of the lifestyle boutique hotel. Plus, enjoy refreshing “lively libations” from signature cocktails to classic domestic brews.
Finally, a lesson in space history: Did you know the first astronauts to successfully complete a flight to space were two primates launched in the Huntsville-built Jupiter rocket in 1959? Meet Baker and Able!
Baker and Able
Miss Baker was a mere toddler when she made her successful flight 300 miles into outer space for a total of 16 minutes—nine of which were weightless! This one-pound squirrel monkey and her companion, Miss Able, were the first two primates to fly to space and return alive on May 28, 1959.
Both were featured on the cover of the June 15, 1959, Life Magazine issue. Sadly, Able—a rhesus monkey—died about four days after returning from space during an operation. Baker, however, went on to spend most of her life in the U.S. Space and Rocket Center.
For years, she happily entertained locals and visitors of all ages. And, Baker has to be one of the only squirrel monkeys to celebrate her 20th birthday in 1977 with a huge party complete with strawberry gelation!
Besides being a famous monkeynaut, Miss Baker also became the oldest living squirrel monkey before her death at 27. Most squirrel monkeys live 15 to 20 years.
